Exclusive: Frank McAvennie predicts West Ham clash v Man City
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie predicts West Ham could earn a draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In their last five matches, Man City and West Ham rank first and third respectively in the Premier League form table ahead of coming to blows this weekend.
Pep Guardiola’s men have won 13 matches on the bounce in the top-flight while David Moyes’ side has also been in good form with the Hammers losing just once in 11 matches and that was against reigning champions Liverpool.
However, up next sees the Irons play against the team you would assume to be Premier League champions-elect with how they’ve been playing.
Although Man City are looking pretty unstoppable, McAvennie believes his former club has enough about them to pull the brakes on their run of wins.
“Man City are on top form and are a helluva team to watch and the West Ham fans won’t mind be saying that,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“I hope they win but you know. It’ll be a good game to watch but hopefully it’s not all one-sided and we can get at them.
“If we get at them, even with counter-attackers, counter-attacks are so quick now at West Ham so they’ll need to be careful but I would like to see them have a go.
“I fancy them to get a draw. Maybe 1-1 or 2-2.
“A lot of it will be with their backs to the wall and you’ve got to expect that but I fancy us to nick one.”
West Ham’s record against Man City is pretty rotten.
The London club has won just three of their last 33 meetings with the Citizens in all competitions and they had lost 10 in a row against them up until the 1-1 draw at the London Stadium earlier this season.
In that match, Michail Antonio and Phil Foden were on the scoresheet for both sides and it would be fair to say we’d be happy with a similar result this weekend.
McAvennie is going for us to draw but let’s be realistic for a moment.
As well as we’ve done and as much as we hope to see this form last, there’s no way Man City are not beating us this weekend.
They’ve been so good lately. They barely ever concede and are scoring goals for fun.
Let’s hope Macca is right but we just don’t see it happening.
