Exclusive: Frank McAvennie fires West Ham transfer warning after Bondswell report
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has warned West Ham against the signing of RB Leipzig talent Matthew Bondswell in January.
According to Football Insider, the Hammers have set their sights on luring the England under-18s defender to the London Stadium in January.
Both Chelsea and Sporting Lisbon are also in the race for the defender, but McAvennie believes that the Irons would be better off looking elsewhere.
McAvennie has suggested that the Hammers should only be targeting Bondswell if he can challenge for the first-team immediately.
“Listen, if he’s a good player, get him in,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“I just think if you can bring in good players, especially defenders. There’s no point in bringing in players that will just sit on the bench – you need players who will improve the team.
“They’ve got an understanding with each other, you don’t need someone coming in, a prospect, we don’t need any more coming in for the future.”
Bondswell was targeted by Liverpool and Manchester United before his move to Germany, so the talent is clearly there.
The question would be whether or not there is an opportunity for him to feature in the first-team squad this season.
We think not. Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku are both thriving in David Moyes’ new system, and that would automatically put Bondswell third – possibly fourth if you consider Ben Johnson there too.
With limited funds available, bringing in young talent such as Bondswell could be the way for the Irons to go. These are the decisions facing Moyes and co in the upcoming window.
