Exclusive: Frank McAvennie blown away by reported West Ham deal to sign Craig Dawson

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has claimed that West Ham United could seal the “deal of the century” by signing Craig Dawson permanently this season.

The Athletic has reported that the Hammers can sign Dawson from Watford for £2million after he makes his 15th start for the club, which could come against Wolves.

McAvennie believes that it would be incredible business, with the defender in the running for the Player of the Season award at the London Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said, “That would be the deal of the century.

“We have to get that done straight away, I think that will be done. If he wasn’t a loan player, he’d probably get the Player of the Season.

“The fans won’t probably give it to him, because he’s a loan player, they might. He’s had a great season, but so have Coufal, Soucek and Rice.

“I would put him down as the Player of the Year if it wasn’t down to the fact he’s a loan player.”

Dawson has been nothing short of sensational.

When the deal was announced that the defender arrived on loan after his relegation from the Premier League, it didn’t blow anyone away in east London.

At the start of the season, Dawson was used sparingly behind the likes of Angelo Ogbonna, but he has been the perfect replacement since his injury.

This deal should be completed as soon as possible, with the £2million simply spare change for a player of his ability.
