Edson Alvarez could be frozen out at West Ham United after ‘wild’ turn of events

Dan Bardell believes Edson Alvarez could struggle to return to the West Ham first team after being sent off against Nottingham Forest.

The Mexico international picked up his second red card of the season in the 3-0 defeat at the City Ground on Saturday 2 November in a damaging defeat for Julen Lopetegui.

The 27-year-old was handed his marching orders for two yellow cards, one being a cynical challenge on the half way line and the other being an ill-timed lunging challenge on Anthony Elanga.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has slammed Alvarez for his decision-making and thinks it will be hard for him to get back into the side when he returns.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Sometimes as a manager, you’re only as good as the decisions your players make on the pitch.

It’s wild to go in like that when you’re on a yellow card, he was never going to get the ball quite frankly.

He’s left his team in the lurch and with a tough task in what is already a difficult game.

With the options that West Ham have it wouldn’t surprise me if he does find it hard to get back in the team once he’s back. He’s let his teammates down on that occasion.

Edson Alvarez slammed for West Ham red card v Nottingham Forest

The defensive midfielder hasn’t proved to be as positive of a signing as many supporters thought he would be when he joined from Ajax.

This has been down to his inconsistency in claret and blue which, this season, has often seen him dropped and replaced by Guido Rodriguez.

This can’t be a surprise to the Mexican given his poor disciplinary record which has often seen him ruled out due to suspension.

It is only so long that Lopetegui will deal with him picking up red cards before dropping Alvarez entirely so he needs to shape up and become more professional.
