David Sullivan stance shared as West Ham United look to finalise Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer
David Sullivan will not match any Newcastle United offer for Everton ace Dominic Calvert-Lewin amid interest from West Ham, Frank McAvennie has said.
According to Luke Edwards [24 June], the Magpies have pulled out of the race to sign the 27-year-old forward due to the Toffees’ “totally unrealistic” £40million price tag this summer.
It is understood, however, that the club’s interest in the striker is not dead, and McAvennie believes the Hammers’ push for Calvert-Lewin [FootballTransfers, 21 June] will not be enough to beat the Magpies.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, he said: “He’s a good player, but I still think he’ll go to Newcastle United. I don’t know why he would because West Ham, as a club, is huge.
“St James’ Park is a great place to play football – it’s a wonderful place to go. It’s like a goldfish bowl at the London Stadium. I don’t think David Sullivan would pay the money that Newcastle would pay but I could be wrong.
“Would I like to see Calvert-Lewin at West Ham? Of course, I would.”
West Ham United to move on from Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer race
While Calvert-Lewin certainly has the ability to be a sensational Premier League striker, his career at Goodison Park has largely been hindered by injury or long spells without goals.
Julen Lopetegui has made it clear that he wants a new striker at the London Stadium as soon as possible, even with Michail Antonio set to continue with the Irons next term.

With 68 goals in 247 appearances, he has the quality to lead the line for the Hammers, though the £40million price tag and potential injuries make the signing an extreme risk ahead of the 2024/25 season.
AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham or Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri seem to be much better options, ones that would not set Sullivan back so much in terms of money.
