David Moyes will wish he had quit West Ham United already as players down tools

Frank McAvennie has insisted David Moyes will wish he had walked away from West Ham after the Europa Conference League final last season as pressure continues to grow on his position.

The former Hammers man explained his view that the players have downed tools and are no longer performing for the manager as not one played well against Crystal Palace.

With rumours swirling about the manager’s future and possible replacements, it was then said that something has got to change after recent results.

McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – explained that Moyes has done a “tremendous” job at the London Stadium, but confessed even he will know it’s “a results business”.

They look to me as if they’ve downed tools. That was it. I’m 99 per cent convinced that it’s not that, it was just a bad game, but everybody? There was not one good player,” McAvennie fumed.

We’ve got boys coming on that I don’t think are good enough and something’s got to change.

I don’t know what the situation is but I bet David will be thinking ‘God, I wish I walked away after the Conference League.’ He’s done brilliantly for West Ham, he’s been tremendous, but he will know as well as anyone it’s a results business.”

David Moyes time running out at West Ham United

If McAvennie is correct and the players have stopped playing for the manager, it becomes inevitable that his time at the club has come to an end, but at the same time, those players should play for the fans and the badge.

Results like the 5-2 defeat to Crystal Palace and 2-0 loss against Fulham are simply not good enough and as much as the blame has been aimed at Moyes’ management, the players also have to bear some of the burden.

This comes amid endless speculation surrounding possible replacements for Moyes, with Ruben Amorim reportedly having met with David Sullivan at his house, while talks with Julen Lopetegui are said to have been going on for “months”.

With several managers reportedly in the frame to take over from Moyes, it appears it will be a case of when, rather than if, the club pull the trigger, with the most likely option being when the manager’s contract runs out this summer.

In other West Ham news, a decision has been made already on another manager linked to the job.
