David Moyes didn’t want to sign Danny Ings as West Ham United exit on cards after Europa Conference League final snub

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Danny Ings could be set to leave West Ham just six months after joining after it emerged that David Moyes may not have been the man pushing for his signing.

Ings signed in January on a two-and-a-half-year deal from Aston Villa for around £15m, but has struggled to adapt to the club and scoring just three times in all competitions.

The England international was left out of the team for the Europa Conference League final and didn’t even get off the bench in the 2-1 win over Fiorentina, and with the striker position seemingly up for grabs for next season Frank McAvennie has revealed that he’s been told it wasn’t Moyes who wanted to sign him.

“Someone told me it wasn’t David Moyes who brought him in,” he told West Ham Zone. “It’s starting to look as if it might be right.

“He’s an out and out striker but that’s not what David wants. We don’t create that many chances.

“He’s wanting someone to hold it up and bring others into play, and that’s why Antonio is playing.

“Scamacca can score goals, he’s injured but he can still score goals. Ings can score goals, he’s done it all his career. But that’s not the way West Ham play at the moment, they’re not creating enough chances for a striker like Ings to feed off.

“So I don’t know, maybe he just turned up and [Moyes] said ‘what are you doing here?’

“It’s not a team for Ings so he’d probably be moving on I imagine.

“He’ll want to play and score goals. If you’re not wanted you’ll want to go.”
