West Ham Zone View: Reported midfielder blow must spell end for snakebitten Hammer
Jack Wilshere’s time at West Ham United has comprised of one misery after another, that misery coming in the form of constant injuries, of course.
The 28-year-old has only played 16 times for the first team, split evenly between eight appearances last term and eight this campaign, since joining prior to the start of the 2018/19 season.
That’s just a woeful record, and now it looks as if he has suffered yet another harrowing injury setback.
Football Insider reported on Saturday that the England international is expected to miss the rest of the season after having hernia surgery this week.
That’s a devastating blow to a player who is beginning to look more and more snakebitten. It’s just been one thing after another for Wilshere.
You have to wonder now whether the Irons might be better simply terminating the midfielder’s contract.
That sounds harsh given the fact that he’s a good player and a nice guy, but his intense susceptibility to injury makes him a costly liability.
The former Arsenal man is on £100,000-per-week at the London Stadium. Now, couldn’t that money be better spent elsewhere?
Obviously you’d have to hand Wilshere a pay-out, but it would surely be better than paying him this much money every week until the summer, by which point he may or may not return to full fitness.
History tells us that he would likely pick up another injury before long even if he does recover fully from this hernia surgery.
it simply doesn’t make financial sense to keep paying him. It sounds brutal, but the Hammers would be better off simply letting him go.
In other West Ham news, a former Hammers striker has been raving about the club’s signing of forward Jarrod Bowen.
