West Ham United utterly embarrassed as Edson Alvarez footage emerges in Mexico win v USA

West Ham United have every right to expect their players to represent the club during the international break.

Whether it’s Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal for Czechia, Lucas Paqueta for Brazil, Michail Antonio for Jamaica, or Mohammed Kudus for Ghana, the players’ actions fall on the club’s shoulders.

With this in mind, Edson Alvarez must hang his head in shame as he returns to the London Stadium after the role he played in an embarrassing fight during Mexico’s 2-0 win over the USA in the early hours of Wednesday morning (16 October).

Already with a two-goal advantage, and with just 25 minutes remaining of the friendly fixture, Alvarez slapped and threw Alex Zendejas to the ground by his collar to start a brawl on the pitch.

As well as earning himself a stupid yellow card, which he has come to be known for in East London, he threw shade on a superb international performance and embarrassed himself in the process.

Sure, it is important to protect your teammates, and he will feel his actions were justified after Jesus Angulo kicked out, but it is entirely unacceptable and he was lucky not to be sent off.

The 26-year-old needs to remain focused on his football, given his lacklustre start to the 2024/25 campaign under Julen Lopetegui’s new leadership.

He was dropped for the 4-1 win over Ipswich Town before the international break, with Soucek and Guido Rodriguez completing the midfield partnership, and Lopetegui can hardly be blamed.

Alvarez has been hammered on multiple occasions so far this season, and this bursting out of emotion on the international stage will do him absolutely no favours in the manager’s eyes.

It’s stupid. It’s childish. It’s just unneeded, especially at the London Stadium as West Ham look to push up the Premier League table after a poor start to the new campaign.

In other West Ham news, Julen Lopetegui can forget about Joel Matip by signing an “outstanding” defender who has dropped £13million in price.
