West Ham United must sign Fotis Ioannidis in January transfer window

West Ham United must reignite their interest in Panathinaikos striker Fotis Ioannidis in January if they want to avoid a Premier League relegation battle.

The Hammers have lacked a consistent focal point for their attack since near to the start of the season after Niclas Fullkrug was injured on international duty.

The German striker was one of Julen Lopetegui’s marquee signings but he hasn’t had much of an impact due to his time on the sidelines.

Fullkrug’s absence has no doubt contributed to West Ham’s poor form this term and their woes with their number nine role need to be rectified soon.

In fact, the Hammers are already eyeing up potential strikers for the January transfer window with summer target Ioannidis possibly on that list [talkSPORT, 22 October].

Fotis Ioannidis would be a stellar signing for West Ham United

Ioannidis was watched “more than once” by West Ham last season and although an offer wasn’t made for the Greek international, his talent is evident.

The 24-year-old was in stellar form last term as he bagged 23 goals and even chipped in with nine assists for his teammates.

While he’s never played outside of Greece, a step up to the Premier League doesn’t feel too far out of reach.

The Hammers will eventually need to find replacements for Michail Antonio and Danny Ings and the Greek striker could be the perfect candidate for that.

He’s still young and would likely develop into an even better player than he already is.

The longest time he’s been sidelined due to injury was a 24-day stint last term when he missed six games but his absence doesn’t seem to be a regular occurrence.

If West Ham wants to improve their standing in the top flight and show they can compete for the European spots, signing Ioannidis feels like a smart transfer to try and get over the line.
