West Ham United: David Moyes achievement evident as £13.6million figure emerges

Despite experiencing heaps of pressure from the fans at West Ham United, David Moyes’ European plan is in full swing after reaching the Europa League quarter-finals.

Having thrashed Freiburg in the second leg of the round of 16, overturning a one-goal deficit in the first leg, the Hammers have drawn a giant clash with Bayer Leverkusen in the next round.

After lifting the Europa Conference League title last season, West Ham will need no extra motivation to bypass the Bundesliga outfit, but the club certainly have one.

Can West Ham United lift the Europa League title?

Reporting via X on Wednesday (19 March), Sean Whetstone revealed the prize money that the London side have earned during the Europa League campaign so far, and what they could finish the season with, potentially, alongside another piece of silverware.

It is understood that, having advanced through the different rounds of the European competition, combined with a Coefficient bonus and a TV Market Pool bonus, West Ham have already made £13,635,743 by reaching the Europa League quarter-final.

Whetstone wrote: “Reaching the semi-finals would bring another (£2.4m/€2.7m), with a place in the final worth (£3.8m/€4.5m). The winners of the Europa League final earn a further £3.4m/€3.9m) and a place in the Champions League.”

In addition to the obvious monetary boost, West Ham would be rewarded for their performances with a spot in the 2024/25 Champions League campaign.

Bayer Leverkusen present a huge hurdle for David Moyes

Despite West Ham’s rollercoaster form this season, especially since the beginning of 2024, Moyes has ensured that his side have remained consistent in Europe.

Although they fell to defeat in Freiburg, West Ham completed an incredible turnaround at the London Stadium with a 5-0 win in the second leg, drawing high-flyers Bayer Leverkusen in the next round.

Of course, fans will be dreaming of lifting another piece of silverware and qualifying for the Champions League, but the full focus should be on Leverkusen, who offer a gigantic threat to their hopes.

Xabi Alonso’s Bundesliga side are unbeaten since the start of the season, but the Hammers certainly possess enough talent to deliver them their first defeat of the campaign.

Coming up against Qarabag FK in the round of 16, Leverkusen’s weaknesses will be evident after they shipped five goals to the leaders of the Azerbaijan first division over two legs.

With AC Milan, Roma, Benfica, Marseille, Liverpool and Atalanta still in the competition, the London club will need to create some magic if they are to achieve Champions League qualification.
