West Ham must delay David Moyes sack decision after news breaks on Thursday

It has been a show-stopping start to the Premier League season during which West Ham and David Moyes have hit back at critics in the best fashion possible.

Following a summer transfer window at the London Stadium that could only be described as chaotic, the Hammers have made a superb start to the league season under the guidance of Moyes. They are undefeated in their opening four games, winning three times and drawing once, and sit fourth in the table.

At one point it seemed unclear if Moyes would even be the man to take charge of the club during the current campaign. Despite ending the season with a European trophy, there were question marks surrounding his future at the east London outfit due in part to their poor form in the league last term, which almost saw them relegated, as well as behind-the-scenes issues.

West Ham

Around a month ago, The Telegraph reported online (7 August) that the Scotsman’s future at the club was uncertain, and although David Sullivan had decided not to sack him at this point, there were still suggestions Moyes himself could walk.

That speculation all looks ridiculous now when considering the brilliant position West Ham find themselves in, as well as the news of Moyes’ nomination for Premier League Manager of the Month for August.

As revealed by the Premier League via their official website (7 September), the 60-year-old has been nominated for the award alongside Mikel Arteta, Ange Postecoglou, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. The other four boss’ positions at the so-called ‘top six’ Premier League sides makes the nomination even more impressive.

Nonetheless, while everything is pointing upwards for West Ham, Moyes will know better than anyone just how quickly things can change in football.

Following such a bright start to the season, the pressure will now be on to continue that momentum. Although they sold Declan Rice, the board reinvested the money from the sale wisely, bringing in some top talent that sees them start this season with a squad arguably better than the one they finished the last with.

A more balanced squad that has European football to compete in only increases the pressure on Moyes to deliver.

So while his position looks safe and sound for the time being, those underlying issues could very quickly re-emerge, and Sullivan might have another sack decision on his hands. This strong start could simply just be papering over the cracks of some problems that haven’t gone anywhere.

In other West Ham news, the club could be hours away from a free transfer decision.
