West Ham midfielder’s future rests on Julen Lopetegui decision

West Ham found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-0 thrashing as they faced Liverpool on Sunday.

Although the league leaders put in their usual impressive standard of performance, Julen Lopetegui’s side were also poor as they were walked all over by their opponents.

The defeat led to plenty of criticism towards the manager although plenty of players were also highlighted for their below-par performances.

One man who was blasted by Gabby Agbonlahor was Edson Alvarez as he said live on talkSPORT (30 December): “Alvarez in midfield, Ajax must be laughing.

“They got £35million for him, and he doesn’t look like he’s good on the ball, just a headless chicken running around. They’ve got some really bad signings.”

The Mexican played half of the game before Lopetegui opted to bring him off at the break reflecting that the manager probably felt similar about his display.

Edson Alvarez not thriving under Julen Lopetegui at West Ham

Alvarez is not a bad player and under David Moyes last season, the midfielder was arguably one of the key players in the squad, so his form this term cannot solely be a reflection of him.

Instead, it seems that under Lopetegui’s management, the player has actively got worse and looks miles away from the standards supporters were expecting from him before.

There is no denying that his current form is out of sorts and the 27-year-old is not showing any signs that he can be part of a West Ham side that can turn their season around, which casts some doubt over what his future will hold.

However, supporters will surely feel disappointed that a player who was previously delivering seems unable to do so now and it does leave question marks over where the blame should be directed at The London Stadium.

Alvarez is not the only player who has struggled to match his previous form under Lopetegui and it seems as though the Spaniard is unable to get a tune out of a number of his side.

Nevertheless, with David Sullivan opting to stick by his managerial appointment for now, this could spell the end of the Mexican’s career at The London Stadium and he could soon find himself moving on to show what he can really do.
