Tim Steidten made to look silly after what Carlos Soler did in West Ham United loss v Liverpool
West Ham United continued their poor run of form against Liverpool with a 5-1 loss in the EFL Cup.
The game was played at Anfield on Tuesday (25 September) and many were eager to see the Hammers put in a decent shift to end their rut.
While they managed to take a 1-0 lead thanks to an own goal from Jarrell Quansah, from that point onwards, the Irons were second-fiddle.
Athletic journalist Roshane Thomas shared his half-time thoughts via X (26 September) and pointed out that the Hammers needed to “see more” from Carlos Soler.
“HT: #LFC 1-1 #WHUFC. Solid performance so far from West Ham. I think Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo can form a good defensive partnership,” he wrote.
“The duo have coped well with Liverpool’s attack. Need to see more from Carlos Soler. He had the second fewest touches in the first-half.”
Carlos Soler needs to prove his worth to West Ham United
Soler was one of many additions made by West Ham during the summer transfer window. The PSG loanee joined the Hammers on an initial loan deal, with Julen Lopetegui’s men including an option to buy upon the end of the deal [Fabrizio Romano, 30 August].
Lopetegui likely brought his fellow countryman in to help ease some of the pressure on top of Lucas Paqueta’s shoulders as the club gets deeper into the season.
Although his arrival was hailed by many at the time, from his latest showing against Liverpool, it feels as if Tim Steidten has been made to look silly by spending the club’s last bit of cash on the 27-year-old.
The Hammers were linked with a plethora of talent during the summer, with Carney Chukwuemeka arguably being the second-biggest name on the list behind Soler [Jacob Steinberg, 30 August].

While on paper it seems like a no-brainer for the Hammers to have brought in Soler over the Chelsea youngster, at this moment in time it feels like the wrong decision has been made.
If the Spaniard wants his option to buy activated, he needs to start pulling his weight when called upon.
