Mavropanos in 3/10 shocker as Wan-Bissaka shines – West Ham player ratings v Bournemouth
West Ham United survived a few shaky spells to find a spot in the Carabao Cup third round draw, after a 1-0 win over AFC Bournemouth at the London Stadium.
There were a few full debuts handed out by Julen Lopetegui to some of the club’s new signings, and on a rather underwhelming night in the East End, Jarrod Bowen’s controversial deflection into the net did win the tie late on.
There were question marks over whether Bowen’s touch past Neto – was a handball offence, after deflecting Mohammed Kudus’ shot – but the goal was given and the Hammers are in round three.
West Ham Zone rated the players out of 10.
Lukasz Fabianski – 5
Never really looked in control from Bournemouth’s set-pieces, not a huge deal to do but made a good save down to his right to stop Ouattara putting the visitors in front before half-time with an acrobatic flick.
Vladimir Coufal – 5
Came in as a late change with Cresswell dropping out, disciplined enough performance from an experienced player. Was never however too eager or threatening going forward as is usually the case.
Jean-Clair Todibo – 4 (off for Konstantinos Mavropanos 46′)
Struggled at times against the Bournemouth attackers, was booked for a foul on Jebbison. Did not challenge Ouattara enough as his flick was kept out by Fabianski. Withdrawn at the break, but the defence were arguably worse after he came off and he will eventually get up to speed.
Max Kilman – 5
No major individual errors from the man who has started every game under Lopetegui, but was part of a defence which only kept a clean sheet due to Bournemouth’s second-half wastefulness in the final third.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7
Best player on the night for the Hammers. Did well quickly adapting as he moved over to left-back when Cresswell dropped out of the line-up before kick-off. Always wanted to make things happen going forward. The odd shaky touch, but an important challenge on Kluivert to stop Bournemouth getting another 1v1.
Edson Alvarez – 5 (off for Guido Rodriguez 60′)
Did not do a lot wrong, but could not affect the game from deep as he previously has done in a claret and blue shirt. Always accurate with his passing, but a largely forgettable night.
James Ward-Prowse – 5 (off for Lucas Paqueta 60′)
Won his duels on the deck, worked hard as always and put a few decent deliveries into the box, but was unable to flick the switch from a set-play the way he has done on so many occasions.
Tomas Soucek – 5
Suffered a slow start, lost several duels you would expect him to win, but gradually improved as the game went on. Did pass up the Irons’ first real chance of the game 40 minutes in, firing over the crossbar.
Jarrod Bowen – 6
Did what big players do, and scored a late winner on a quiet night – whether or not it hit his arm, there was no VAR. Was not involved enough in the general play, disappointing by the captain’s standards for the most part. Did test Neto with another effort, cutting inside Senesi and forcing a save.

Crysencio Summerville (off for Mohammed Kudus 75′) – 4
Would have been gasping for his first start for the club and did show flashes, running at Bournemouth right-back Hill. Was frustrating in the main whilst on the ball having missed a good opportunity late in the first half. Not enough to convince Lopetegui for a start.
Niclas Fullkrug (off for Emerson 75′) – 4
Barely anything to feed off. Did win a few headers and linked up with a good flick for Summerville’s chance just before half-time, but an uninspiring debut in which he only had 14 touches.
Substitutes
Konstantinos Mavropanos (on for Jean-Clair Todibo 46′) – 3
Positionally poor, let Bournemouth in behind on several occasions after replacing Todibo. Booked for a foul on the edge of the area which West Ham got away with.
Guido Rodriguez (on for Edson Alvarez 60′) – 6
Knows how to play in small spaces, and is not afraid to knock a long diagonal ball to get the team back on the transition. West Ham’s midfield improved when he came on after an hour.
Lucas Paqueta (on for James Ward-Prowse 60′) – 5
A quiet night for the Brazilian, but did play his part in Bowen’s goal. Was introduced by Lopetegui to try and instil some creativity into the team. There will certainly come better days for Paqueta, but he chipped in.
Mohammed Kudus (on for Crysencio Summerville 75′) – 6
Will claim a rather fortuitous assist for Bowen’s goal, and by hook or by crook, the team are into the hat for the next round. The side look more dangerous when he is on the pitch.
Emerson (on for Niclas Fullkrug 75′) – 5
Came on, kept things ticking in the final 15 minutes.
