Lucas Paqueta steps up during West Ham United crisis in 100% performance v Burnley
Lucas Paqueta stepped up amid an injury crisis at West Ham, putting in a top performance against Burnley as he helped the side overcome a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1.
With Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio ruled out, it was up to the other attacking stars in David Moyes’ side to show their worth, and the Brazilian certainly did that at Turf Moor.
It is not often a player without a goal or assist is the standout performer, particularly with Mohammed Kudus also stepping up and providing two assists, but Paqueta shone once again today.

The pressure fell to Paqueta and Kudus in particular to make their talent shine during the Hammers’ injury woes, and the attacking stars of this side needed to prove they could step up in the absence of Bowen and Antonio, and they did just that.
Paqueta recorded two key passes and two big chances created in the game, with a 75% dribble success rate and 100% cross success rate, taking it upon himself especially in the second half to make things happen with West Ham on the front foot and chasing the game. [Sofascore]
Not only did he force the issue going forward, but his work rate and effort getting back to help out his side also proved a crucial part of the game today, as the Brazilian made three tackles, one interception and one clearance to contribute to the defensive effort.
With nine of 12 ground duels won, three of five aerial duels won, and three fouls drawn, it was an all-around outstanding display from Moyes’ star man.

Fans will still be hoping Bowen can return to the side as quickly as possible, while Antonio’s presence was missed up front, but if Paqueta can continue turning in performances of this quality, his presence will ease the pain of the injury crisis.
