Finance Guru: Bonus figures come under scrutiny at West Ham United
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...
Dan Plumley has insisted that bonus payments to those in the boardroom will always come under the scrutiny of fans, and it is no different at West Ham United.
Karren Brady was said to have been given a £1million bonus for her role in bringing Daniel Kretinsky to the club, but the Daily Mail since reported that it was actually a UK agent and a Czech counterpart who were key to that deal.
Finance Expert, Plumley, suggested that fans usually don’t believe the money paid out to those in the boardroom is justified, with the developments fascinating at the London Stadium.

“These are always fascinating things to look at, aren’t they,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.
“In terms of money paid out to directors, again, all the fans want in this regard, I think, if clubs are going to do this, it’s fine in a business model, the fans want to see a justification behind that.
“That’s where with some of these figures, the fans don’t like the look of them because they don’t really think they’re justified with the work that goes on, whether it does or doesn’t.
“When you see bonus figures like that to directors, it will always come under scrutiny. That seems to be an interesting one here with the amount of money and the links of who actually got this one over the line.”

It didn’t take long for the truth to come out that Brady didn’t actually play a massive role in Kretinsky coming to the club, despite the bonus being described as that.
Although, if Kretinsky does complete his full takeover as expected and takes West Ham United to the very top with big spending and smart business, even tiny roles in bringing him to east London have to be applauded.
That is what Brady will be hoping for, anyway.
