Roy Keane explodes at West Ham United players after what he saw, clashes with Gary Neville

Roy Keane has exploded at West Ham United players and branded them “idiots” after their 5-0 defeat to Chelsea last week.

The Hammers were thrashed in their last game, which led to an announcement from the club that David Moyes will be leaving the club at the end of his contract this summer.

His final home game as manager will come on Saturday 11 May against Luton, and while discussing the game on the Stick to Football podcast (10 May), Gary Neville shared that he expects a big reception for the manager.

“I think they’ll give him an amazing reception, I think the players will be up for it,” he said.

But that led to Keane interrupting him and questioning the players following their performance at Stamford Bridge.

“And why weren’t the players up for it last week?” he said. “The players will be up for it next week, what was wrong with last week?”

Neville then defended his comments and clarified.

“I’m not defending West Ham’s players, I’m saying I just think there’ll be a thank you type environment.”

But Keane went back on the offensive, and went on to brand the players “a joke”.

“Why didn’t they thank him last week? I’m amazed by players,” he said.

“We’ll be up for it next week, forget last week by the way. Idiots.

“West Ham players, officially, are a joke. ‘We turn up when we want’, ‘we need a new manager’, that’s why they never win [anything].”

Roy Keane has a point, but as usual he’s being harsh on West Ham

The performances in recent weeks haven’t been anywhere near good enough from the West Ham players, and that stretches back to the beating suffered at the hands of Crystal Palace.

But the performance against Chelsea was completely unacceptable, and the players looked completely uninterested in playing for the badge or the manager.

Moyes was already expected to leave before that but it seems like that loss made the club accelerate their decision to announce it ahead of his final home game in charge.

That should be motivation for the players and fans to put in a great showing as a thank you, but Keane is right that the players in particular should have been doing that anyway just out of professionalism.

It won’t be hard to see the difference in effort and that is what will be annoying to everyone. But as usual Keane just says things as he sees them and doesn’t quite think it through first, which leads to him going over the top.
