Jamie Carragher shares what David Moyes will do to West Ham in crucial Everton showdown

Jamie Carragher believes David Moyes‘ familiarity with West Ham United will play its part in Everton getting a result at London Stadium.

West Ham maintained their two-point gap to the relegation zone with a goalless draw at Crystal Palace on Monday evening.

With five matches to go, West Ham’s destiny is in their own hands, but they do have some difficult fixtures in the coming weeks.

One of which is Everton on Saturday, as Moyes returns to the club he managed twice, the second of which was with a great deal of distinction.

Ahead of relegation-threatened West Ham hosting Europe-chasing Everton, Carragher has delivered his pre-match prediction for the London Stadium encounter.

David Moyes to frustrate old side West Ham

After keeping West Ham in the Premier League in 2018, the Hammers decided against extending Moyes’ stay at the east London outfit, only to return for the Scot in December 2019.

In his nearly five-year stay, Moyes repeatedly led West Ham into Europe and guided them to Conference League glory in 2023.

David Moyes’ West Ham spellsWin percentage
2017-18: 31 games, nine wins, 10 draws, 12 losses29%
2019-24: 231 games, 103 wins, 45 draws, 83 losses44.6%

But despite that success, West Ham fans grew weary of the team’s deteriorating quality of football, something that wasn’t easy on the eye.

Fast forward to the present, and Moyes is at Everton, while Nuno Espirito Santo is trying to keep West Ham in the Premier League.

With five games to go, West Ham are in dire need of wins, with Tottenham just two points back in 18th.

And while the Hammers will believe they can beat Everton at the London Stadium, Carragher thinks Moyes’ team will get at least a point on Saturday.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, he said: “David Moyes knows the club, that stadium, most of the players.

“David Moyes always gets results. He went to Brentford last week, gets a little draw. I can just see them [Everton] making it difficult. David Moyes knows his way around the Premier League, as does Nuno.”

West Ham tightening up at the back

While West Ham are in a precarious position, one thing that stands them in good stead is their ever-improving defence.

Chelsea loanee Axel Disasi and centre-back partner Konstantinos Mavropanos are proving to be tough nuts to crack in 2026, with the pair working well in the Hammers’ defence.

Disasi in particular starred for West Ham against Palace, but their attack was not quite up to the same standard at Selhurst Park.

In American Football, the adage, ‘Defences win championships’, is often trotted out.

For West Ham, who still have to play Arsenal and Brentford, among others, it may be the key element that keeps them in the Premier League.
