Edson Alvarez is inching closer to departing West Ham with Olympiacos stealing the march for the Mexican.

The 28-year-old has been earmarked for an exit throughout most of the summer, with the midfielder falling out of favour under Graham Potter last season.

Now, Nuno Espirito Santo seemingly does not want to keep the Mexican around.

Alvarez has not been short of options, with FC Koln previously in the hunt to seal a transfer.

However, that did not conclude as all involved would have hoped.

Nonetheless, both Real Sociedad and Olympiacos have been pushing for a transfer, with Alvarez now coming to an agreement himself.

Alvarez' West Ham exit could begin to intensify over the next few days before the transfer deadline.

There is not long left for deals to be completed, and the Irons will not want a fringe player like the Mexican to stick around.

The 28-year-old would also like to leave in search of game time, and that conclusion is heading in the right direction.

According to the Greek outlet, Sport FM, Alvarez has now reached an agreement with Olympiacos over a transfer this summer.

The report shares that now the 48-time Greek champions are now looking to reach an agreement with West Ham.

It is a significant step in Alvarez' future with Real Sociedad also among the interest parties this transfer window.

Sport FM also shared that the feeling in England is that talks "can be concluded positively" for the exit of the 102-cap international.

Why West Ham must step up efforts to sign a midfielder

The Hammers will not need to replace Alvarez as he was never part of their plans of squad-building over the last two summers.

However, they may still need to sign another midfielder this summer window.

James Ward-Prowse has been linked with a Southampton return, and that would leave Nuno's squad quite light in the middle of the pitch should that deal happen.

Freddie Potts has also been sold by West Ham, with the futures of a few other midfielders up in the air now as well.

Soungoutou Magassa and Mohamadou Kante could leave West Ham this window, making the final few days before the deadline quite interesting in the midfield department.

Nuno will not want to be left under-equipped with promotion the ambition this season.
