West Ham United could hold on to Crysencio Summerville for longer than they expected.

The Netherlands international was one of the Hammers' best players last season despite relegation.

He proved himself as an impactful player at Premier League level before earning himself a World Cup call-up.

The 24-year-old excelled in the group stage and proved his worth to Ronald Koeman and Co.

That has only added to the exit speculation surrounding the winger as the summer window goes on.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Summerville, but a move could now be delayed as they wait on an exit.

It has come as a surprise to many that the Red Devils want the attacker this summer.

Michael Carrick's side are on the lookout for a new left-sided option and have looked at the Dutchman already.

It doesn't appear as if any progress has been on a move, but that is largely due to antics at Old Trafford.

Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall reported on Sunday that the Red Devils are holding out to sell Marcus Rashford before moving for a new left-winger.

He wrote: "If United do manage to offload Rashford, then I think they will try and use that money to sign a left-winger. We know they like Crysencio Summerville at West Ham and Everton's Iliman Ndiaye.

"They have become more open to reintegrating the 28-year-old, and there have been positive talks between the two parties, but I think a departure is still seen as the best option."

With a departure looking likely for the England international, it could prompt a future move for Summerville later this summer.

What Man United see in Crysencio Summerville as West Ham transfer talks begin

When could Summerville join Man United?

With the Irons in the Championship, they don't have much of a leg to stand on in these sorts of negotiations.

With a Premier League giant like Man United knocking, the ex-Leeds United man will likely want to make the move out of the second tier.

He probably won't be happy that a move is being delayed by a potential exit for Rashford, but it could be weeks until he leaves.

The former Barcelona loanee is currently at the World Cup with England and is looking ahead to a semi-final on Wednesday with a chance of a Sunday final on the cards.

That would then make way for the forward to take some holiday away from football, further delaying a move.

It could mean that an exit isn't sealed until later in August or it could even push close to the 3 September transfer deadline.

West Ham will now just sit and wait to see how this saga unfolds while looking to keep hold of Summerville for as long as they can.
