West Ham want to reignite Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car pursuit

West Ham are reportedly still keen on signing Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car after being linked with him all summer.

According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, the Hammers will be joined by billionaire-owned Newcastle in the race to sign the 25-year-old.

The Croatia international’s deal expires in the summer of 2023 and there is understood to be some interest in bringing him to the Premier League before that.

Good move

West Ham’s quest for a centre-back was well documented all summer and Caleta-Car appeared to be one of the names on the club’s shortlist.

According to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, the club were set to re-enter the race for the Croatian, but nothing seemed to materialise then.

The Hammers eventually moved for Kurt Zouma and managed to sign him from local rivals Chelsea.

That said, Zouma’s first-choice centre-back partner is Angelo Ogbonna, who is 33 and has his best years behind him.

Caleta-Car would undoubtedly be an upgrade on the Italian and prove to be a good long-term partner for the Frenchman.

Even Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is an admirer and was understood to be keen on signing the player, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

Whether it’s a January pursuit or in the summer, Caleta-Car is definitely a player the Hammers must look to sign.
