West Ham United transfer news as likely winner named in race to sign Anel Ahmedhodzic

Ipswich Town are confident of beating West Ham and Wolves to the signing of Anel Ahmedhodzic, according to HITC.

The online source reported [22 August] that Kieran McKenna's newly promoted side is in pole position for the Sheffield United defender despite the Hammers holding talks over a potential move.

Both Wolves and Julen Lopetegui's side are set to miss out on the 25-year-old centre-half, who has a £17million release clause in his contract at Bramall Lane [Fotbolldirekt].

The Hammers have experienced a rather exciting summer transfer window, bringing eight new faces through the doors at the London Stadium, ranging from Wes Foderingham to Euro 2024 superstar Niclas Fullkrug.

While Lopetegui has addressed the issues in defence, with David Moyes' side only conceding fewer Premier League goals than Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United last term, business is not finished.

Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo have been introduced as new centre-backs, with outgoings now the main priority for the London-based club [Fabrizio Romano].

Lopetegui still has Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd and Konstantinos Mavropanos within his ranks, with the latter even starting the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.

All three have their ongoing issues, whether that be wanting a move away, failing a medical at a new club, or a former club wanting to resign them. If all three were to leave before August 30, centre-back options would be few and far between.

While Ahmedhodzic could have been a decent signing to put those worries to bed, newcomers Ipswich look set to add another surprising transfer to their list, having already added Kieffer Moore, Jacob Greaves, Liam Delap, Kalvin Phillips and Sammie Szmodics.

If the Hammers are to bring in another defender before the 30 August deadline, the backroom staff will need to hurry along a new deal before the transfer window slams shut.
