Niclas Fullkrug is having a career renaissance away from West Ham at Werder Bremen.

The German striker failed to make an impact at London Stadium and dropped out of Nuno Espirito Santo's plans.

His move to E20 was ultimately a financial failure by all accounts.

He was brought to West Ham in 2024 in a deal worth around £27million, despite him being 31 years old at the time.

Fullkrug's sell-on value was never going to reach those heights, and the Irons have been facing the consequences.

The German has been unable to secure a permanent move out of East London, but that could change amid an admission out of Germany.

What could block Niclas Fullkrug's permanent move to Werder Bremen?

Fullkrug may have finally found his permanent route out of West Ham at Werder Bremen.

His form for the Bundesliga side has been exceptional, with the West Ham loanee joint-top of the goalscoring charts with six goals.

That has led to the possibility of him remaining at Bremen following this season, although his temporary deal does not include a purchase option.

Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Werder Bremen's managing director of professional football, Clemens Fritz, has confirmed they would like to keep Fullkrug after this season, but they do face a challenge.

He said: "Ultimately, there are three parties involved: West Ham, Niclas, and Werder Bremen. And of course, that's what makes it challenging. Things are sometimes a bit easier with only two parties."

Fritz also goes on to state he is confident "all of Bremen would be delighted" if the German were to remain for next season.

But he admits it is still far too early to be discussing the prospect of a permanent transfer.

Either way, the Hammers will be feeling positive that Fullkrug can finally complete his exit.

West Ham will only manage a nominal fee for Fullkrug

When Fullkrug returns from loan, he will only have a year left on his West Ham contract.

Additionally, with him being 34 years old by then, there will not be many sides open to offering an attractive sum for the veteran forward.

There have previously been talks of the Hammers terminating the striker's contract, but those were shot down, as seen by him only being away on loan.

But that may be an option to revisit down the line, especially as the removal of his wages will be just as financially beneficial as whatever nominal fee they may look to hold out for.

That agreement would also allow Fullkrug to move to Werder Bremen more easily, with that three-way issue completely removed from the equation.
