West Ham United would've never expected Niclas Fullkrug to return to form.

But that's what he's done since rejoining Werder Bremen on loan in the summer.

The Hammers signed the 33-year-old from Borussia Dortmund in 2024, in a deal which cost the club almost £30million.

Fullkrug would go on to score just three Premier League goals for the Irons before being sent out on loan to AC Milan in January.

The German scored just once in Italy and temporarily returned to Rush Green in the summer before getting a move back to his homeland.

Fullkrug is regarded as one of West Ham's biggest transfer flops in history, but the doors are now shockingly open for him to get recalled for Germany's national team.

Sporting director speaks out on West Ham flop Niclas Fullkrug - 'Why not?'

Fullkrug is on fire for Werder Bremen and has scored five goals in six games for the German outfit.

The striker scored a stoppage-time equaliser against his former side Borussia Dortmund on Friday, despite Werder Bremen being 2-0 down in the 85th minute.

He's now scored in four consecutive Bundesliga matches, which is more than he ever managed in E20.

Germany's sporting director Rudi Voller has been impressed with Fullkrug, with the door now seemingly open for the number nine to get a call-up for the national team.

Voller said, as quoted by Sports1.de: "He can header; that's a fact. If he scores goals like that - yes, why not? For Fullkrug, as for all candidates, the following applies: Good performances in the Bundesliga help.

"Jurgen Klopp will follow the next games. At the same time, however, one should not forget: We're talking about the European Championships in two years; he'll be even older."

Voller suggested that the West Ham loanee is edging closer to becoming "undisputed" once more after his return to Werder Bremen.

The only concern for the forward is his age.

Either way, the Hammers will most likely be trying to wrap their head around how and why he was so poor for them at the London Stadium, as the player has admitted himself that he struggled to find form.

What we know about Fullkrug's West Ham contract

Werder Bremen do not have a buy option for Fullkrug, and will not be able to get him on a free transfer next summer.

The former Germany international is contracted to West Ham until June 2028 on large wages, but he is unlikely to ever feature in Nuno Espirito Santo's plans.

He was understood to be earning around £54,000 per week at AC Milan, per Daniele Longo, which was expected to be the majority of his wages.

Any permanent exit next summer would likely only happen if Fullkrug were to compromise on his wage demands with interested clubs.
