Niclas Fullkrug has opened up about his struggles at West Ham United.

The striker was brought to the London Stadium in 2024, costing £27million to sign him from Werder Bremen.

The 33-year-old played just 29 games for the Hammers, scoring three goals in his debut season with the club, before failing to net once in the first half of last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo's arrival saw Fullkrug fall even further down the pecking order, which opened up a loan move to Milan in January.

The former German international managed just one goal in 20 games for the Serie A giants, but now finds himself back with Werder Bremen.

After rejoining his former side on loan, Fullkrug has finally pinpointed why it went wrong at West Ham.

Fullkrug is on fire for Werder Bremen and has scored four goals in five games since rejoining the Bundesliga side.

His loan move back to his former side does not include a buy option.

However, the experienced number nine's contract in E20 runs out in the summer of 2028, and he could be up for sale again in 2027.

Fullkrug has found his touch in front of goal once again in Germany, reflecting on why he couldn't do the same for the Irons.

He said, as picked up by Bulinews: "You only have to look at my medical record. I’ve had to suffer a lot, but almost never because of muscle injuries.

"I can’t really explain why things went so badly for me at West Ham. England probably isn’t made for me as a type of player or as an athlete either.

"Now I just hope that everything stays the way it is."

West Ham fans have said all along that Fullkrug struggled because he could not adapt to the Premier League, and he appears to have openly admitted this himself.

He stated that England does not suit him as an "athlete", which is convenient, as one of the main arguments was that he could not press or make attacking runs in the desirable way at the London Stadium.

However, he holds no bad blood towards the Irons.

How Fullkrug is still supporting West Ham from Germany

Fullkrug's West Ham career is all but over, and things would have to take a sensational turn to see him play at the London Stadium ever again.

Despite West Ham fans being very vocal in their criticism of the forward, he has not forgotten about the club while out on loan in Germany.

Fullkrug posted an Instagram "dump" on Wednesday, and slide 13 of his photo carousel featured a picture of him watching West Ham's 2-2 draw against Millwall.

The picture was taken just after the Hammers scored through Max Kilman, as the centre-back reacted to the post by leaving a like and commenting with a GIF of Fullkrug flexing in a Werder Bremen shirt.

Kyle-Walker Peters also liked the post, and it's clear that he may still be in some of the WhatsApp group chats with some other West Ham players.
