West Ham make contact with representatives of West Brom star Matheus Pereira
West Ham have held talks with the representatives of West Brom attacker Matheus Pereira, according to Express Sport journalist Ryan Taylor.
Writing via his personal Twitter profile on Tuesday night [20/07/21], Taylor claims that the Irons have entered discussions over a deal for the 25-year-old Brazilian.
He said: “Reported back in May that West Ham were interested in signing Matheus Pereira if they couldn’t get Jesse Lingard. Talks have now been held with player’s reps. Leicester City and RB Leipzig never followed up interest.”
Given up on Jesse?
This is surely an admittance of defeat in our pursuit of last season’s loan star Jesse Lingard, or at least a strong suggestion that our attempts to sign the Manchester United midfield have gone awry.
Lingard looked to have really settled in east London, but the hefty price tag set by his parent club may scupper a deal for the 28-year-old, and Pereira could be the perfect alternative.
The “sensational” [Express and Star] West Brom star lit up the Premier League in 2021 after a slow start to life in the top-tier, and he ended up with 11 goals and six assists.
Despite Pereira’s best efforts, the West Midlands club still finished 19th and suffered relegation, and that has put the Brazilian well and truly on the market.
He may not cost that much less than Lingard would in terms of a transfer fee, but his wages are sure to be significantly lower, while he is three years the junior of the England international.
The dream of Lingard may be over, but in Pereira, we could land the perfect replacement.
In other West Ham news, the Irons have made multiple bids for ‘this Crowd-pleaser’ but could loan him straight out.
