West Ham lurk for deadline-busting Ben Chilwell agreement with Chelsea

West Ham are lurking over Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell before the deadline, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports in its print edition (page 59, 27 January) that the England international wants to leave Stamford Bridge on loan before 3 February.

It states that the Hammers face competition from Premier League rivals Everton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

Graham Potter wants the Irons to make three signings before the deadline as he seeks to salvage the East London club’s season. [Record]

West Ham could move for Chelsea star Chilwell

The 28-year-old has featured just once this season in the EFL Cup and has not made an appearance in the top flight under Enzo Maresca.

However, he worked with Potter at Stamford Bridge so would bring an understanding of the 49-year-old’s tactical demands and what he requires from his full-backs.

Emerson and Aaron Cresswell are the Hammers’ current options at left-back but the England star would be an upgrade on the ageing duo.

If Potter can rediscover the former Leicester star’s best form then he would be an astute signing for the London Stadium club.

If the Irons can agree on a clause for a permanent deal with a reasonable fee then it could secure their future in the position for the long term.

Otherwise, it would not make much sense to allow Chilwell to potentially get back to his best and then return to Stamford Bridge for next season.
