West Ham interested in Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet

West Ham are in the hunt to sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet as David Moyes aims to add to his centre-back options, according to The Athletic.

The news outlet claims the Irons are keen on Serbian defender Nikola Maksimovic, who is available on a free transfer after his contract at Napoli expired.

However, it is understood that 26-year-old France international Lenglet is also on David Moyes’ radar as the Scot aims to find a replacement for Fabian Balbuena.

New centre-back needed

After Balbuena’s contract expired at the end of last season, Moyes was left with just Issa Diop, Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna as his only three senior centre-backs.

Aaron Cresswell was used as a left-sided centre-back when Moyes played with a back-three last season but if you include him, there are three players there who are aged 31 or above.

Lenglet has only just turned 26 so he’s at a great age for a defender.

He should be fully developed by now and still has his best years ahead of him.

The French centre-back has plied his trade at Nancy, Sevilla and Barcelona in his career to date, while also earning 13 caps for France.

Last term, he made 48 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, helping them win the Copa Del Rey and starting all but one of their eight Champions League fixtures.

Let’s face it, if he can play regularly for Barcelona – he can play regularly for West Ham.

According to stats by WhoScored, Lenglet averaged 69.7 passes per game for Barca in La Liga last season, ranking him sixth in the whole of the Spanish top-flight.

He also completed two clearances per game, ranking him second in the Barcelona squad, and won 1.8 aerial duels, the third-best at the Nou Camp.

If Moyes wants to play with a back-three more often next season, the left-footed Lenglet is certainly someone who could play a role in it due to his ball-playing ability and his strength in the air.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are in talks to sign this player who could be a mainstay for Moyes next season.
