Areola could be new West Ham No 1 if he signs from PSG

West Ham are in talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola and he could become David Moyes’ new number one, according to Sky Sports reporter Tom White.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Wednesday, White reported that the Irons want to sign Areola, 28, on a loan-to-buy basis from PSG after he spent last season on loan at Fulham.

It is understood that the French shot-stopper could even replace Lukasz Fabianski as Moyes’ first-choice in goals.

As shown in a clip on Football Daily’s Twitter account, White said: “We’ve got some more breaking transfer news.

“We knew that this would happen after the Euros, that things would ramp up in that respect and it involves West Ham. And also it’ll interest Fulham fans as well because West Ham are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over signing the goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.”

White added: “This deal would be a season-long loan with the option to make it permanent.

“Areola’s got another two years on his deal at Paris Saint-German.

“West Ham’s number one for quite some time has been Lukasz Fabianski.

“This would certainly be competition and maybe even Areola would be coming in as the number one.”

New No 1 needed

Fabianski has been a superb servant for West Ham.

The 36-year-old has made 101 appearances in all competitions for us since his arrival from Swansea in 2018, keeping 25 clean sheets in the process.

As our defence wasn’t great until Moyes’ arrival, Fabianski was one of the major reasons we didn’t get relegated under Manuel Pellegrini.

He made top saves in almost every single game but in the last couple of years we’ve also seen that the Polish shot-stopper has issues with fitness.

Last season, he missed three Premier League matches and the season before that, he missed 13.

Fabianski is also 36 and in the final year of his contract so it might be time to start looking elsewhere for a new number one.

Areola can be that player.

The France international did well on loan at Fulham last season and at the age of 28, he’s just about getting in his prime years.

We don’t want to see Fabianski go anywhere but at the end of the day, every player’s time comes and it could be time for a change of guard in that position.
