West Ham barking up wrong tree amid new Anass Salah-Eddine details

West Ham United failed with an attempt to sign Anass Salah-Eddine late in the window, with further details now emerging.

It was already known that Salah-Eddine had rejected an approach from West Ham on deadline day.

The Hammers were eyeing the Roma defender in their search for a new left-back.

That search eventually led them to Adama Boiro, who arrived from Athletic Club prior to the 11pm deadline on Tuesday.

Had West Ham got their wish, it would have been Salah-Eddine at the London Stadium instead.

However, it is clear the Irons never really had any chance of signing the 24-year-old.

Why West Ham had no chance of Anass Salah-Eddine deal

Nuno Espirito Santo will just be glad to have got a left-back in, following the exit of El Hadji Malick Diouf to Brentford.

Salah-Eddine had been linked on and off with a move to West Ham prior to news emerging of the rejection on Tuesday.

According to Thursday's print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, Salah-Eddine was never once interested in the move.

The 24-year-old did not consider swapping top-level football for a move to England's second tier.

On that basis, it would have made much more sense for West Ham to pivot to their next target a lot earlier.

West Ham weren't alone in wanting Salah-Eddine deal

While the player himself was against the move, it sounds as though Roma themselves were more than open to the sale.

The Italian club were looking to raise funds, which they could have done by selling the full-back to West Ham.

It was not to be, though, and instead the Hammers have turned elsewhere to Boiro.

That may work out for the best, too, as the 24-year-old sounds like he will tick a lot of boxes.

The only downside was the time it took to bring in a left-back, with it long apparent Diouf would be moving on.

Nuno now pretty much knows which players he has to work with for the next four months, although exits are still possible with other windows open elsewhere.
