Spanish giants Sevilla are interested in taking Castellanos as they have just sold Akor Adams to Venezia for a fee of more than £17million.
A report from Vamos Mi Sevilla on Saturday claims that the player has officially told the Irons of his refusal to play second tier football.
It states that his priority is an immediate return to La Liga, where he thrived with Girona on loan in the 2022–2023 season, with Real Betis also interested.
The option of a loan is understood to be gaining traction, with it seemingly impossible that the Hammers regain their full investment this summer.
Why Sevilla loan may make sense for all parties
Castellanos has shown that he has what it takes to play in England, and contribute regularly.
Therefore, a loan may make sense for the Rush Green side, as they would surely not want to lose him permanently.
That is especially true, if they can't recoup the £25.2m that they spent on his services, as the report claims.
The ideal solution may well be to sanction a temporary departure, and link back up with the two-cap international when they are back in the top division.
