talkSPORT pundit raves about West Ham United signing Gianluca Scamacca

TalkSPORT pundit Lucy Ward believes Gianluca Scamacca’s transfer from Sassuolo to West Ham is one of the signings of the summer so far.

It has been reported by The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano (via Twitter, 26 July) that the 23-year-old Italian international has completed his medical ahead of signing his contract for the Hammers.

BT Sport and BBC Sport commentator Ward was full of praise for Scamacca’s move to the London Stadium.

Talking live on talkSPORT on Tuesday 26 July, in a clip posted to the station’s Twitter, she said: “Scamacca what a signing!

“In Italy now they’re saying he’s gone too early… we don’t want him to go.

“For West Ham to sign him at this stage is a coup and also he’s different to Antonio.

“He’s 6ft 5in, he’s fast, he’s skilful, he’s powerful and he strikes a ball really well and obviously scores the goals.

“If West Ham can pull it off it’s probably one of the signings of the summer.”

Great option

From an outside perspective, it might be easy to assume that Scamacca’s physical attributes will mean he is of a similar ilk to Michail Antonio.

However, Ward is spot on in her assessment of the 23-year-old who will soon be wearing the famous claret and blue jersey.

His ability to hold the ball up and be a target man will be a really good fit for David Moyes’ side, but he can also be a threat in behind due to his good burst of pace.

West Ham

Furthermore, his finishing ability will provide the Hammers with a real threat from inside and outside of the box if he can replicate his 16-goal season with Sassuolo.

It will be important for Hammers fans to be patient with Scamacca, with the Premier League a tough league to adapt to.

However, if and when he adapts, the Italian international will prove to be a superb addition at the London Stadium in the 2022/23 season.

The Hammers’ faithful will be eager to see their new striker in action when the deal is announced.
