Rennes brace for West Ham United bid to sign centre-back Nayef Aguerd, David Moyes wants him

West Ham are back in the hunt to sign Rennes centre-back Nayef Aguerd after a failed swoop last year, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper reports on their website that David Moyes wants to sign the £20million-rated Morocco defender and “French sources” say that Rennes are bracing themselves to receive a bid.

It is understood that other Premier League clubs are interested in Aguerd, 26, with the ex-Dijon defender playing a major role in Rennes’ bid to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Worthy addition

West Ham cannot get through the summer transfer window without signing reinforcements at centre-back.

Angelo Ogbonna, Craig Dawson and Kurt Zouma have all been troubled by injuries and suspensions at various stages of this season while Issa Diop is, to be brutal, probably not good enough for when the Hammers are aspiring to be.

Aguerd is at a good age, he’s a full international, he’s playing for a great team in Ligue 1 and he’s been in superb form too.

French football experts Get French Football News reported earlier this year that Aguerd is “now one of Ligue 1’s best defenders”, who’s been a “diamond in the rough” for fourth-placed Rennes.

He’s a ball-playing defender too with stats by WhoScored showing that Aguerd ranks eighth in Ligue 1 for passes made per appearance [71.7]. His pass accuracy is 89 per cent.

It’ll cost a lot for West Ham to sign him as £20million isn’t cheap.

However, it’s a signing that would very much be welcomed in East London and would show that this club is continuing to move in the right direction under Moyes.

While there’s been a lot of success this term, there are signs that the squad is becoming a bit stagnant.

In other West Ham news, Sky Sports report that the Irons are finally ready to make a major move to sign this striker in the summer.
