Monaco confirm approach for Edson Alvarez in West Ham United transfer update
West Ham United have had it rough across all competitions this season.
Graham Potter has been brought in to try and rectify the wrongs that Julen Lopetegui made at the London Stadium during his time in charge, and it seems like that’s proving quite difficult.
Fans likely expected the Hammers to make a fair few additions to bolster their chances of staying in the top flight, but instead only Evan Ferguson was brought in.
Edson Alvarez was among those linked with moves away throughout the window, but in the end the squad was kept intact.
However, that hasn’t stopped Monaco’s technical director from adding more fuel to the fire regarding their pursuit of the Mexico international.
Edson Alvarez could have been heading for London Stadium exit
Since the season kicked off, Alvarez’s role within the Hammers’ set-up has been brought into question.
The Mexico international has been a mainstay in West Ham‘s squad this season despite his underperformance in a lot of games across the campaign.
Speaking to Fox News Mexico (10 February), Monaco’s technical director Carlos Avina shared an insight into the approach the Ligue 1 side made for the former Ajax man.
“Edson is obviously a player I know very well from my time at América,” Avina said.
“It was an option that we were exploring and pushing for, unfortunately, we couldn’t reach an agreement.
“He is doing very well at West Ham and I think it is no surprise that clubs like us and from other leagues are also looking for him.”
Graham Potter needs to keep hold of Edson Alvarez
Although Alvarez hasn’t been the best player within the Hammers’ ranks team this season, it feels like he’s a far better option than the likes of Guido Rodriguez at the moment.
While the Argentine was brought in over the summer to try and bolster the Hammers’ midfield ranks, it feels like he’s been seeking an exit since he set foot in London and it’ll only be a matter of time before he’s shown the exit door himself.

The fact that James Ward-Prowse was recalled from his season-long loan at Nottingham Forest shows how poor the Hammers’ midfield has been this term, and if they allow Alvarez to leave in the summer, they’d be even weaker unless an adequate replacement is signed.
A move for Alvarez could be something that is potentially discussed in the summer, but only for the right price.
Because realistically, without getting a decent chunk of money for the 27-year-old, there’s no need for them to ship him off as they wouldn’t be able to fund a replacement.
