Mateus Fernandes decides on Tottenham as West Ham star reacts to Real Madrid approach
Mateus Fernandes' future continues to remain a hot topic at West Ham United.
The Portuguese midfielder shone for the Hammers last term, attracting interest from across the continent as a result of his form since joining from Southampton.
Nuno Espirito Santo's side would drop down to the Championship at the end of the term, leaving it all but certain that the 21-year-old is headed for the door.
Having proven his ability in the top flight, the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have lodged interest.
Surprisingly, rivals Tottenham were also mentioned as an interested party last week.
And with the latest reveal in mind, fans in East London will hardly be happy with Fernandes.
West Ham fans won't be happy with Mateus Fernandes' choice
After standing out in East London, it is only natural that the 21-year-old star has so many suitors.
This includes Real Madrid, with returning boss Jose Mourinho said to hold Fernandes in high regard, as per Marca.
This comes after a deal for West Ham's Fernandes was ruled out, with the Portugal Under-21 international preferring Tottenham.
It is said that he believes there will be more opportunities to develop in North London, prompting Madrid to get negotiations with Chelsea underway.
And what about Man United's interest?
Since the end of the season, Hammers fans have been driven from pillar to post with all the contrasting reports surrounding Fernandes' future.
Now, Spurs is listed as a potential preference, while Manchester United hold off on the deal due to the financial implications.
On one hand, he clearly has his career in mind and his head screwed on, with the clear priority being minutes and development, over an instant move to Madrid.
But, the thought will always be there that it is Tottenham.
At 21, Fernandes is a long way away from his peak years, and the thought of the level he could reach is scary when his current ability is considered.
Him reaching those levels at Spurs though, will just be a horrible feeling for Irons supporters, whether the decision makes sense on a personal level or not.
