Tottenham up the ante for Mateus Fernandes transfer as new talks take place for West Ham United ace
Tottenham Hotspur are stepping up their pursuit of West Ham United ace Mateus Fernandes, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Portugual international, 21, is a man in demand after the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League last season.
West Ham will need to make sacrifices in the transfer market as a result of their drop to the second tier and Fernandes looks certain to be moved on.
The attacking midfielder scored three goals, provided four assists, and had an 87 per cent pass accuracy in the Premier League last season.
His form has caught the attention of Manchester United, who have been most prominently linked to his signature, though Real Madrid are also said to be among his suitors.
It now looks as though the Hammers' fierce rivals Tottenham are trying to steal a march as they look to bolster their ranks for the coming campaign.
Tottenham make contact as Mateus Fernandes exit becomes inevitable
Fernandes only make the move to the London Stadium from Southampton last August, in a move said to be worth more than £40m.
The Irons are holding out to double their money on Fernandes - who Nuno Espirito Santo said had a "fantastic season" last month - with a fee around £80m being bandied around.
According to Romano, Man United remain in talks with Fernandes' camp and have been for several weeks.
However, the prominent Italian journalist said Spurs have now been in contact with Fernandes' agent to try and muscle in on the deal.
He added that Tottenham's interest is separate to that they hold in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Who else could leave West Ham this summer?
It has previously been suggested that West Ham will need to rake in around £100m in player sales following their relegation.
If they can raise £80m from cashing in on Fernandes that would go some way to doing that.
But he is not the only linke with a London Stadium exit, with captain Jarrod Bowen linked to both Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Crysencio Summerville, currently representing Netherlands at the World Cup, is also drawing reported interest from the Red Devils.
Full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is another who is said to be attracting suitors from the top flight.
