Konstantinos Mavropanos looks likely to depart West Ham United following their relegation, but exactly where remains unclear.

The Hammers' top stars are on the radars of plenty of clubs throughout Europe, and work is already being done on West Ham exits.

Mateus Fernandes looks to be the first to depart, as Tottenham advance in talks for the Portuguese midfielder, with a deal expected in the £80million range.

But Mavropanos may not be far behind him amid the latest reports surrounding his West Ham future.

The Greek defender has been linked with a number of clubs, particularly in Germany.

And now a new suitor has emerged, with Bayer Leverkusen entering the fray to sign the West Ham star.

Why do Bayer Leverkusen want Konstantinos Mavropanos?

West Ham fans will be well aware of the qualities that Mavropanos has to offer, but Bayer Leverkusen have one particular reason as to why the Greek is an attractive signing.

With Alejandro Grimaldo set to join Atletico Madrid, the Bundesliga club feel they are now lacking in leadership.

According to BILD, Mavropanos is one of the candidates to fill the void being left.

The report shares that the Greek is viewed as a "defensive rock" as they make leadership qualities a high priority for their transfer business.

Bayer Leverkusen are set to compete in the Europa League in the 2026-2027 season and it could be an opportunity Mavropanos wishes to jump at.

Why West Ham must be careful with centre-back options

The Hammers look set for quite a shake-up in central defence already. Axel Disasi will not be at London Stadium, meanwhile Jean-Clair Todibo's internal dispute with Nuno threatens his Irons career.

The Athletic previously shared that Todibo told the manager he would never play for him again.

Additionally, Max Kilman has not provided much hope he can become a key man for West Ham after failing to impress over the past few seasons.

And now with reports of Mavropanos attracting attention from club's playing in European competition, there is every possibility that a whole new backline is built.

This would leave Ezra Mayers as the standalone centre-back that was part of West Ham's squad last season.

That would be a risky move as relationships in defence are extremely important. The East London club will have to secure some defensive signings well in advance of the season beginning.

Or else they could face a difficult start ot the Championship season, and their promotion hopes.
