Joshua Zirkzee labelled future West Ham United player after Manchester United draw v Chelsea

Jacob Steinberg has backed Joshua Zirkzee as a future West Ham United player following Manchester United’s draw with Chelsea.

The Red Devils could only manage a 1-1 draw with Enzo Maresca’s side at Old Trafford on Sunday (3 November) with Bruno Fernandes second half penalty cancelled out by an excellent goal from Moises Caicedo.

Zirkzee was a second-half substitute for the home side and while Adam Crafton, a journalist at The Athletic, was left baffled as to why United signed him, Guardian journalist Steinberg suggested he was destined for the London Stadium.

Writing on X on Sunday (3 November) Crafton wrote: “Curious as to what exactly Man Utd thought they were signing in Zirkzee” and Steinberg replied: “Future West Ham player.”

Will Joshua Zirkzee exit Manchester United after West Ham transfer admission?

The Hammers haven’t exactly had the best of luck when it comes to buying strikers over the last few seasons.

Few clubs in the Premier League have managed to purchase forwards that have made scoring goals more difficult than the Irons, whether it be Simone Zaza, Gianluca Scamacca or even Danny Ings more recently.

Even Niclas Fullkrug has failed to deliver so far in a claret and blue shirt having missed the majority of the season so far through injury, having only arrived in the Premier League from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

On the face of it, Zirkzee fits that bill. The young striker hasn’t looked up to the pace of the Premier League so far this term having left Bologna in the summer, only scoring once in his first 10 league matches.

Hopefully, the Hammers will have learned from their mistakes and avoid the 23-year-old if Manchester United do eventually decide to cut their ties with the Dutchman.

They may well need a new number nine when January rolls around, but signing Zirkzee would do very little to ease their problems at the top end of the pitch.

On this occasion, sticking with an injury-prone Fullkrug, an out-of-form Ings and Michail Antonio could well be the best course of action for the Hammers, Julen Lopetegui and Tim Steidten.
