Joel Veltman has been a useful asset since coming in at West Ham United.

Before the Dutchman came in, there was widespread frustration surrounding the Hammers.

The lack of transfer business represented a concern as the squad prepared for Championship football.

The versatile defender was the first to come through the door in a free transfer after his Brighton exit.

His addition didn't necessarily halt the annoyance surrounding the window, but there were positives to take.

Veltman has brought experience to the West Ham squad as we now assess what we know about his contract.

What is Joel Veltman's West Ham wage?

There is always a need for players with maturity to play a key role in a dressing room.

The Irons didn't necessarily have enough of that after being relegated from the Premier League.

It's fair to say that the 1992-born man has exactly that off the back of a senior career that has lasted over 14 years.

He joined Brighton in 2020 and departed their six years later with just short of 200 appearances under his belt.

West Ham were the side to land his signature and will reportedly pay him £57,000-per-week for the season.

That accumulates to around £3million for the year, with his contract set to run for just one year, with the option of a second.

It looks like good value, but that has to be compared to his prior deal at the Amex.

Edvin Austbo's West Ham contract examined: Wages, duration and amortisation

Did Veltman take a wage cut at West Ham?

With the claret and blue outfit dropping to the Championship, their wage bill needed to take a cut.

They look to have taken steps towards that with players like Edvin Austbo and Divine Mukasa coming in.

That is why the signing of Veltman now looks slightly strange compared to some of the other business.

Valuball suggests that the Dutchman was reportedly earning £80,000 in weekly wages at Brighton.

That would mean he dropped his salary by approximately £23,000-a-week to join the Hammers.

It only enhances how good this move could prove to be for West Ham, especially if they are promoted.

Veltman looks to represent positive value, but needs to continue to show it moving deeper into the season.
