West Ham could step up their efforts to sign Arne Engels from Celtic this summer.

It's clear that Nuno Espirito Santo wants to add midfield depth to his squad at some point.

That is certainly going to be necessary after Mateus Fernandes completed a move to Tottenham earlier in the window.

The Portuguese ace certainly brought in a great fee that needs to be spent in the right way.

The Hammers brought in Nils Koppen with the idea of doing exactly that ahead of the new season.

Engels has emerged as a target as the Irons could look to make a move for the Celtic star.

Why do West Ham want Arne Engels?

There has been plenty of noise surrounding potential recruitment at the London Stadium this summer.

It is clear that midfield options are wanted, with West Ham Zone reporting that Gustavo Sa is wanted from Famalicao alongside a whole host of options.

Another option has emerged in the shape of Engels after Hammers News reported on Wednesday that Koppen is interested in the Belgian.

Reo Hatate and Michel-Ange Balikwisha are also targets, but the 22-year-old could prove to be a top option.

He is wanted due to his versatility as Nuno appreciates that he can feature in midfield, on either flank or as a full-back if needed.

He has been a regular across various positions since joining Celtic in 2024 and could be a useful addition in East London.

One thing is certain, though - the Hoops are going to drive a hard bargain.

Celtic have already rejected big money for Engels

The Hammers may want the midfielder, but may have to put their money where their mouth is.

The 2003-born ace signed at Parkhead from Augsburg two years ago and Celtic clearly want to keep hold of him.

West Ham are now interested in his signature, but Nottingham Forest have also made their presence known.

The Reds saw a £25million bid rejected in January after turning down previous offers of £14m and £17m, according to Sky Sports.

That could be due to the fact that the largest bid came on deadline day, but it is clear how much Celtic want for Engels.

West Ham know what they need to do and have the perfect knowledge to go and make a deal happen.
