How much Gustavo Sa knew about West Ham transfer talk after being 'bombarded'
Gustavo Sa has revealed he was on the beach when he first learned of West Ham United's reported transfer interest.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder was heavily linked with West Ham during the summer window.
Plying his trade in Portugal with Famalicao, he was fresh off the back of an excellent 2025-26 season in Liga Portugal.
In the end, no move to the London Stadium materialised for the Portuguese youth international.
He did, however, end up moving to English football by signing a permanent deal with Nottingham Forest, before heading back out on loan.
With his transfer saga now settled, Sa has opened up on what it was like to be linked with a move to West Ham.
Did Gustavo Sa know anything about West Ham transfer talk?
West Ham Zone followed reports in early July claiming West Ham had agreed a £17million deal to sign Sa.
A deal couldn't get done with the Hammers though, and that enabled Forest to eventually swoop in at the above price.
The Premier League side have since loaned him out to Greek giants Olympiacos for the duration of the 2026-27 season.
And, speaking in a recent interview via Liga Portugal's Videocast, Sa made it abundantly clear that talk of an imminent move to West Ham was news to him.
"I honestly know zero about that," he said. "Of course, I remember when the stories came out I was with my girlfriend at Azurara beach, in Vila do Conde.
"I started getting bombarded with messages and stories saying I was on my way to London for West Ham, and that’s the most I ever knew about it.
"I never had knowledge of negotiations. I never had knowledge of an agreement between clubs. Again, I never knew anything."
So, it's probably safe to assume from Sa's testimony here that a move to West Ham was never really on the cards this summer.
But how has he been getting on in Greece since Forest loaned him out to Olympiacos?
West Ham won't have major Sa regret at the moment
Had Sa instantly started lighting up Greek football this season, then West Ham chiefs will have been watching on in frustration.
That hasn't quite been the case, however, as he's scored just the one goal in his first seven games for Olympiacos in all competitions.
Of his four Greek Super League outings, only one of those has been part of the starting lineup, culminating in 117 minutes of league football.
As such, he's yet to carve out a key role in Imanol Alguacil's squad, and may be resigned to a rotational player this term.
Plus, West Ham have been enjoying success with Divine Mukasa, and Nuno Espirito Santo will be delighted to have the 19-year-old.
It seems best that everybody moves on, now.
