West Ham United are in a transfer race against the clock with Crysencio Summerville.

The 24-year-old has become the West Ham transfer saga of the summer so far, as it always threatened to be.

Relegation to the Championship offered the Hammers little prospect of retaining the Dutchman's services, after a standout 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

Summerville was signed from Leeds United in the summer of 2024, as he joined the Irons in a deal worth north of £25million plus add-ons.

As such, West Ham will want to extract every last penny they can from a buying club this summer, as their profit margin isn't particularly wide.

That profit window is set to grow smaller in the near future too, and is set to remove a strong card from West Ham's hand when it comes to negotiating the best possible price.

Crysencio Summerville's release clause expiry date revealed

West Ham Zone has been following Roma's reported interest in Summerville throughout the summer, with the Serie A side seemingly his most likely destination as things stand.

And, in a fresh report from Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday, they claim that the team from the Italian capital are "accelerating" their recruitment drive for the Hammers winger.

It's said that Summerville has now returned home after holidaying in Miami, and is considering the financial package Roma have offered him.

The report claims that Summerville is holding out for €6m euros (£5.1m) as an annual salary, but that Roma don't wish to hand him more than €4.5m (£3.8m) plus bonuses.

However, one other potential sticking point in the transfer relates to his release clause, and more specifically, when it expires.

It's claimed that Summerville has a €45m (£38.2m) release clause in his West Ham contract, but that it will run out in around 10 days' time (27 July as of Friday, 17 July).

Roma are stated to have offered €40m (£34m), which if true, shows that the two parties aren't far away from striking an agreement, but would suggest West Ham are playing hardball over his release clause.

All roads do seem to lead to Rome for Summerville, and if so, what sort of attack will he be joining and will it set him up for instant production?

How Roma's attacking numbers compared with Serie A rivals in 2025-26

Undoubtedly one of the biggest and most historic clubs in Italian football, the attraction of a move to Roma for Summerville is obvious.

However, just because it's a high-profile team in a top European league with Champions League football on offer, doesn't necessarily mean it would be the right fit for him.

As per FotMob, Roma averaged the joint-third most goals per game in Serie A last season with 1.6, but did only rank sixth for expected goals (xG) with 55.0.

They also placed just sixth for big chances created with 83, eight for accurate passes per game (409.1), seventh for accurate crosses per match ( 4.5) and 10th for accurate long balls per 90 (22.8) respectively.

In addition to those numbers, Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini almost exclusively plays with wing-backs and three central defenders, so Summerville may be getting eyed up to play slightly deeper for them rather than the out-and-out winger he's been at West Ham.
