Fabrizio Romano shares latest information on West Ham United chase for Marco Asensio
Marco Asensio is more likely to leave Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2023 than leave this summer despite interest from West Ham, says Fabrizio Romano.
The Spanish international has been at Real Madrid since 2014 and a first-team regular since 2016/17, where he scored in the UEFA Super Cup final and UEFA Champions League final that season.
But as he approaches the final year of his deal at the Bernabeu there has been rumours that West Ham could be ready to pounce, however Romano told his Substack that there has been no official proposal as of now.

“Despite what you may have read elsewhere, there are currently no official proposals from West Ham or Newcastle for Marco Asensio, just rumours,” he said.
“If I were to make a prediction on his future, I think he has a good chance of staying at Real Madrid for another year and then deciding his next move in view of June 2023 when his current contract expires.
“So far this is the player’s strategy, but if proposals arrive in August, the situation can change quickly.”
Huge
Being able to attract a four-time Champions League winner to the London Stadium would be absolutely huge for West Ham.
There’s no doubt about it, that Asensio would be a massive statement signing for the Hammers and would offer great threat going forward in the team.

But right now the spot in the team for a left-footed right winger is occupied by Jarrod Bowen and there is absolutely no need to replace him right now and the plan is to give him a new contract.
Asensio is older and would likely command higher wages than Bowen too, and he won’t want to drop down to a team competing for European places to play back-up to a player who has been key to the progress of West Ham in recent seasons.
It’s no surprise that West Ham’s interest has been exaggerated and no surprise that Asensio is looking at other potential offers in the future rather than right now, so this looks like a non starter.
