ExWHUemployee names Jamal Lascelles and Calum Chambers as new targets for West Ham United after Kurt Zouma injury
West Ham are in the market for a domestic loan signing to bolster their defence after Kurt Zouma’s new injury, according to ExWHUemployee.
Zouma is expected to be out for between 3-6 weeks with a quadriceps injury picked up against Everton, leaving David Moyes with just two fit senior central defenders after the sale of Craig Dawson to Wolves.
That has seen the club take a look at the loan market, with previous targets Michael Keane and Nathaniel Phillips now joined by Newcastle United captain Jamal Lascelles and Aston Villa’s Calum Chambers all being monitored according to Ex.
“It seems that Moyes prefers a domestic-based player on loan with an option to buy, with Michael Keane, Nat Philips, and Jamal Lascelles all being monitored,” he wrote on his Patreon account (26 January).
“Another player that could come into contention is Calum Chambers who has been told he could leave Aston Villa (Emery their manager also moved him on from Arsenal when he was manager there) although he doesn’t fit Moyes’ usual height requirements but can play at right back.”
Interest
West Ham have struggled in the January transfer market so far because financially they’ve been hit hard after spending big in the summer.
Danny Ings was brought in quite quickly in a good deal after Gianluca Scamacca suffered an injury, but they’ve failed to bring in Terem Moffi too.
A defender has now become a priority despite Moyes insisting he didn’t need a new defender after letting Dawson finally leave for the Midlands, and there are some interesting names in the hat.
Michael Keane has been linked for a while but Everton are reluctant to loan him out to a relegation rival, while Nat Phillips has always proven too expensive in talks with Liverpool in the past.
Lascelles has lost his place at Newcastle though and Chambers is versatile enough to play at right-back and central midfield too, which could sway Moyes towards him. If a deal can be done it’ll be good to bring them in as cover, but there isn’t much time left to get it done.
