West Ham United door open for Sergi Roberto transfer with announcement ready
West Ham are unlikely to be finished in the summer transfer window yet as Julen Lopetegui continues his overhaul of the squad.
The Spaniard has already seen seven players come through the London Stadium doors, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka closing in on doing a medical [Dharmesh Sheth], and there could be one further deal to be done.
The Hammers are interested in Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto, as per Sport 45 [28 July], with the 32-year-old seduced by a move to the Premier League this summer.
The prospective transfer has raised some eyebrows at the London Stadium, but with his experience with the La Liga giants mixed with his previous work with Lopetegui, it seems like a smart move in East London.
Now, West Ham may have an opportunity to target his signature on a free transfer, with the utility player set to announce his exit from Barcelona within the next 24 hours [Fabrizio Romano].
West Ham United to sign Sergi Roberto?
The 32-year-old has experienced many fine years in Spain with his beloved Barcelona side, but he no longer has a future there and might be dreaming of finally playing in the Premier League.
His ability to play as a right-back and midfielder makes him a very attractive potential signing, especially if he’s available on a free transfer, and his age would suggest he could be a bit-part player next term.
Roberto would provide some much-needed cover for Edson Alvarez in the middle of the park despite the addition of Guido Rodriguez, while Vladimir Coufal could use a challenge in the full-back position.
While Wan-Bissaka would already do that, his ability to play on the left flank could help push Emerson to play his best, with reinforcements signed for both sides.
There is no doubt that the Spaniard has a winning mentality, having scored the winning goal in the famous 6-1 Champions League tie between Barcelona and PSG in 2017, and Lopetegui will be a huge fan.
