Flynn Downes to regret West Ham United exit after what happened recently

Flynn Downes may now regret his move to Southampton after leaving West Ham during the summer.

The Saints signed the 25-year-old midfielder on an £18million deal after he helped the club secure promotion from the Championship during the 2023/24 campaign [The Athletic].

Despite being a childhood fan of the Hammers, he did not hide his love for the seaside club during the summer transfer market and was happy with his permanent move to St Mary’s Stadium.

While Julen Lopetegui’s side has stalled and faltered in the Premier League so far, sitting in fifteenth after eight matches, there are only two teams in the relegation zone with just one point each.

Only above Wolves on goal difference, Downes’ Southampton are struggling to get going after gaining promotion via the Championship play-offs last term, and their last match was a giant blow.

Having gone 2-0 up through Cameron Archer and Joe Aribo, Russell Martin’s side eventually left the ground with zero points after a massive comeback from Leicester City.

Facundo Buonanotte and Jamie Vardy drew the Foxes even before Jordan Ayew scored in the eighth minute of added time to steal the points.

Of course, Downes is gaining plenty of important experience for his development, but he may have been given just as many opportunities at the London Stadium this season.

Both Guido Rodriguez and Edson Alvarez have been unable to impress in the middle of the park, with Tomas Soucek often replacing one of them, which would have allowed Downes to thrive.

While Southampton are far from relegated at this point in the season, many expect them to finish in the bottom three spots and drop back down to the Championship.

If that were to happen, the 25-year-old is not on loan this time, and he would not be able to return to the London Stadium and remain playing Premier League football for the 2025/26 campaign.
