West Ham United must avoid falling behind as they prepare for life in the Championship with Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm.

The Hammers' relegation would be sealed on the final day of the season, despite winning 3-0 against Leeds.

As a result, the East London club have been all over the shop in recent weeks, with the confirmation of Nuno's future being the only piece of positive news.

However, they are in desperate need of a reset and must make this happen to avoid running the risk of Nuno regretting that decision.

Heading into the campaign, the Irons need to raise upwards of £100m in sales, which is somewhat slowing down their recruitment.

Nuno is not a figure that you want to get on the wrong side of, and West Ham need to fight tooth and nail to avoid this over the summer.

What is holding West Ham back as summer prep starts?

The Hammers were relegated in the most frustrating fashion, with a 3-0 win on the final day not being enough to keep them up.

As a result, they have had nothing like the preparation time that both Wolves and Burnley have - the benefits for the former being shown by the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez.

Then, the lack of preparation for relegation is combined with the sales that need to be made.

Both Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes will certainly leave this summer. However, little to no headway has been made thus far, while Jarrod Bowen's future remains up in the air alongside others in the squad.

And with the World Cup now underway, deals could prove difficult for both incomings and outgoings.

West Ham return for pre-season at the start of July, and Nuno will surely not want to be hanging on to players who are desperate to leave.

West Ham can't upset Nuno - he has a shaky history

As mentioned, Nuno is not the sort of character to be getting on the wrong side of.

Less than a year ago, his relationship with Nottingham Forest came to an abrupt end just weeks into the season, with disagreements arising over recruitment.

Doing a fantastic job at the City Ground by taking the Garibaldi to Europe, Nuno was willing to give it all up to stand by his principles.

He has confirmed his intentions to guide West Ham back to the top flight next season, though what happens if the club backs down on promises? It is not as if the Irons do not have a history of poor recruitment and planning.

A similar situation to that of Forest could end disastrously, with huge long-term implications should the East Londoners fail to get out of the Championship.

No matter the public opinion on Nuno following relegation, West Ham must stand by him, or they risk a situation that could boil over.
