West Ham Women experts: Irons deserved opening day win v Everton
We’re delighted to welcome Michelle Irons as our exclusive West Ham Women expert. Each week she’ll be giving her views on the biggest talking points at Victoria Road…
West Ham Women expert Michelle Irons believes the Hammers were fully deserving of their opening day victory against Everton at Victoria Road.
A 44th-minute goal from Lisa Evans was enough for Paul Konchesky’s side as they got their Women’s Super League campaign off to a winning start.
Irons was full of praise for her side and felt that French defender Hawa Cissoko was the man of the match for the Hammers.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone Irons said: “This was a well-deserved 3 points with the home fans in full voice.”
“The only goal of the game came from a well-worked corner just before halftime with former Hammer Brosnan making a real hash of the clearance for Zui to head the ball back into the danger zone for fan favourite Lisa Evans to nod home.
“My player of the match was Hawa Cissoko she was fantastic all day she did her job perfectly and protected the back line with confidence and grace leaving Arnold with not much to do.
“She allows the fullbacks to really push on and create a lot more space. This was a well-deserved 3 points with the home fans in full voice.”
Konchesky’s side now face a tough test as they host Manchester United at Victoria Road in their next league fixture, with the Red Devils coming off a 4-0 win over Reading.
It was an excellent way to start the season for the Hammers, with captain Dagný Brynjarsdóttir also excelling on her opening fixture with the armband.
