West Ham United want to hire Juventus chief scout Matteo Tognozzi

West Ham United are interested in hiring Juventus chief scout Matteo Tognozzi to help them in the transfer window this summer, say TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Hammers are looking to appoint a director of football this summer after the club were left disappointed with the performance of the club and certain players having spent around £185m in the last two transfer windows.

After links to the likes of Tiago Pinto, Lee Dykes and reports that Paul Mitchell is the favourite for the role, now Italian journalist Marco Conterio is reporting that Tognozzi is the man they want to step into the role for the summer and beyond.

“From Juventus to London? West Ham thinks of the Juventus chief scout Matteo Tognozzi as the market man of the club that has just won the Conference League,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (9 June).

“Tognozzi was key in the arrival in Turin of Iling, Soulé, Yildiz, Huijsen and more.”

Talent

Tognozzi is known for bringing elite young talents to one of the biggest clubs in world football, so if West Ham can tempt him away from Italy and bring him to east London then it would be a real coup.

But if he is the man to step into the club and take up this new role for the first-team transfers is a whole other question that we can’t know the answer to.

Ideally the club would be better off getting in someone who knows the job and what it entails, and has experience negotiating deals rather than just identifying talent.

However if he is to come to the club in a scouting role and helps the club to bolster the academy that is currently thriving to help make that pathway better and more stacked, then of course he is welcome.

West Ham have to start acting like a big club now and taking top staff from other top clubs looks like a great way to do that.
